If you're looking for a slot 1 flash kit with 100% ROM compatibility, complete "drag 'n' drop" ease-of-use and don't plan on expecting much more from the cart, then I can definitely recommend the R4 DS as your solution.
Gameboy-Advance.net
The R4DS is basically another slot 1 flash kit for homebrew and game backups (aka NDS ROMs). It is a new product made by a previously unknown team. Maybe they have been operating under other name previously but not to my knowledge. What is good about
DSDatabase.org
The R4DS looks great and feels great. It has a very user-friendly OS that is fully skinable. The compatibility with roms and homebrew is the best among all carts. There is no doubt that R4DS is a winner.

  1. Good Stuff

Posted by warmongering pacifist on 22nd Aug 2010

I got this in 2 weeks which is the minimum expected time. Its good for the price but there are definitely better cards out there.

  2. Best card for the DS, hands down.

Posted by Speculant on 2nd Aug 2010

Even though the maximum storage is 2GB, this is the simplest, easiest card out there. But with the storage for 5-6 good DS games and a load of emulated games (GB, GBC, NES, SNES, etc), this card cannot be beat.

If you want SDHC support get a DSTWO, it's the only other card that is in the same legendary league as this card.

  3. Wood R4 gives the R4 a whole new perspective.

    Posted by Spy123 on 23rd Jun 2010

I bought an R4 a few weeks ago and recieved it in the mail recently. I have to say that the Wood R4 makes this a great product. The flashcart is compatible with so many games and the fact that its only $6 makes this product a great choice for poeple who are searching for their first flashcart.

  4. Does the job.

Posted by BrotatoChip on 14th Jun 2010

Now it doesn't have the capabilities of the others, but the price tag can't be beat, and in all honesty the only reason I ever have had to order another one is because I lost my previous one.

The DSi support is not an end all factor when you had no intention of upgrading your DS/DSL.

Easy to update, and use I never had any issues with this cart.

It may lack the flash of the Supercard DSTWO, or Acekard 2.1 but hey its an oldie and a goodie, and has served me well for years. I just hope in advent of the newer games people will find a way.

For 6 bucks however what do you have to lose?

  5. R4 back from the Grave

Posted by Adeus on 7th Jun 2010

Like many others who got a R4 as it was the cheapest flashcart available few years back.
I too took the leap and bought my very first R4.

Was about to take my R4 and warp it up and keep it away and never ever to see the light again.
Then came Wood R4 which totally make me hold the thought of warping it up and burying it.

WoodR4 gives R4 so much more than its original makers did before and i must say I'm loving every bit of my R4 right now.

For those first timer who still in the mist of considering which first flashcart/s you should get? Look no further R4 is the answer for all your troubles.

  6. It's okay... with wood R4

Posted by Unknown on 7th May 2010

This is a decent flashcart with Wood R4. I can't really recommend it though due to its age and the lack of SDHC support. If you're on an extreme budget and somehow can't afford a superior flashcart, like the acekard 2i, then go for it.

It runs well, it's built well. What else can I say?

  7. Wood R4 makes this an excellent budget flashcart

Posted by RupeeClock on 5th May 2010

Years ago, the R4 single handedly began an era of Slot-1 DS flashcarts. To date, thanks to the R4 we have an abundance of choice, many good, some bad, but most exceeding the original R4.

The original R4 had long since died, with no more updates, but thanks to Yellow Wood Goblin and his fantastic Wood R4 firmware, combined with how cheap the original R4 has become...this makes the R4DS a fantastic flashcart for those on the cheap!

My R4DS arrived just like my original did many years ago, in the same box with a microSD USB adapter, a blue case, and of course the R4DS itself.

The microSD adapter unfortunately is pretty poor quality. It is similar, but different to the original adapter I received, but critically it performs VERY slowly. I advise you buy a separate microSD adapter rather than using the pre-packaged one.

The blue game case was also, a bit odd. The blue material is made of some unusual feeling rubber, where as my original blue game case feels much nicer.

As for the R4DS itself, it runs absolutely fantastically.
Having tested a multitude of DS games I legally own and have self-dumped, they all worked perfectly!
That includes infamous ones such as Pokémon Soul Silver, Mario and Luigi 3, and Wario Ware D.I.Y.

Homebrew also runs flawlessly, all off of the bundled 2gb Kingston microSD.
The microSD is absolutely fine and will work well for what you need.

All in all, this original R4DS with Wood R4, makes for an awesome cheap flashcart. I highly advise it for anyone who needs something cheap for their old DS or DS Lite, or just wants a hit of nostalgia.

Unfortunately, the only thing holding this cart back now is the lack of SDHC and DSi compatibility. If this cart had those it could very well, be a force to be reckoned with.

  8. Wood R4 breathes life into this product.

Posted by Dialexio on 11th Apr 2010

I'll be honest with you, like many others, I loathe the R4. Now that you know that, you're probably wondering why the heck I gave it four stars. Well, thanks to the newly-released Wood R4, you can run games as new (or troublesome) as Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver... without patching! (I do not condone using the official R4 firmware, which is highly outdated.) Combined with the $6 pricetag, this is by far the cheapest way to get your game on. (Did I mention the build quality is sturdy?)

Despite a few setbacks (no SDHC support, no DSi support, flaky homebrew support, the R4's infamous reputation), I now believe this would be great if you want a quick, cheap, and easy way to play your backed up games.

  9. Not as bad as Mr. Shadowmanwkp says it is.

    Posted by Rusty-kun on 10th Apr 2010

I've owned a couple of R4s in the recent past, and have even helped others get their own. Know why? Because the R4 is a darn good flash cart. It plays most older NDS games and newer games are usually patched by the hacking community for the average player's convenience (I'll assume you're downloading legally :D).

As stated, the R4 does not have support for SDHC flash cards due to lack of support in general, but if you're a part of the majority, you probably don't need to hold that much stuff at one time. Also stated, the R4 does not work on the DSi/XL, but since not everyone has the latest and greatest (not really) systems, that's not much of a con. Just buy something newer if you've got something newer!

The R4 also works with GBA expansion paks, such as the EZ Flash 3-in-1, well, but one will need to read up on how to set that up/run it, if one should be so inclined to extend their playability.

As far as my usage goes, I've hardly ever had a problem with my R4. It doesn't work with some homebrew apps as well as I should like, but many work just fine (particularly Moonshell). I've never had problems with the games I play, but as I don't normally use cheats, I can't vouch for their usability. For newer games, support can sometimes be found on forums, but these sometimes require a different firmware (usually one called YSMenu).

Customization of the R4 is pretty sweet as far as skinning goes. There are large communities of skins and skin makers, so there's a lot of flexibility there. You can also make your own if you just can't find something you like.

So, that pretty much raps up my review. I've owned my R4 for a couple of years, and I usually use it on a daily basis, so I have a fair amount of experience with it. If you own a DSi, you're out of luck here; buy something better/newer. If you own an original DS/Lite, R4's are a pretty good way to go if you want something that works with most DS games.

    Peace! :D

  10. A really cheap flashcart but that's about it

Posted by shadowmanwkp on 7th Apr 2010

The R4 is a really cheap flashcart by the R4 company. The flashcart is made for DS and DS lite only, so the DSi and DSi XL won't be able to run it. The R4 plays roms as it should, but there are a few bugs in the firmware (like cheats not showing up). Add up tot the fact that there is no official support anymore because the R4 company got sued by nintendo and no SDHC support (so no SD cards with a higher capacity than 2GB), you get a flashcart that you should avoid unless you don't have any money.

    Pro's
    + Extremely cheap
    + Easy to use
+ Uses a micro SD (like most flashcarts)

    Con's
    - Does not work with a DSi/DSi XL
    - No support except with alternative firmware (so many new games do not work)
    - No SDHC support
    - Wii connectivity compatibility is poor
    - Buggy firmware, like no cheats showing up
